Another popular allegorical work studied in the Middle Ages comes from Plato 's The Republic . [10] In the story, commonly known as the Allegory of the Cave , Plato describes a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all their lives facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire and begin to ascribe forms to the shadows. [11] The work is an allegorical comment on the lack of education in society at the time and the philosopher’s place in society as a teacher to enlighten the "prisoners."
